The last departure

Last days of the expedition – Sept 7th, 5am. We swiftly take down the camp and walk to « the container » where our equipment is stored. After a quick breakfast, we meet up with Jørgen at the pier. Ittoqqortoormiit nearest airstrip can only be reached by boat (or helicopter), and strong wind is expected by midday. Jørgen is in a hurry to leave.

Back to Ittoqqortoormiit

Last days of the expedition – Jørgen, local teacher, brings back the whole team in two quick rides to Itto. It's time to take care of the last buisiness with the Inuits, and to pack all the gear which will be shipping back by Northsailing after we left. We enjoy these last moments in Itto, as they allow us to better understand the day-to-day life of this remote community. Farewell Greenland !

Sydkap – Windy dance between Icebergs

There is one week left before our flight back to Iceland. The clock is ticking. Ironicaly, without boat, we had never been that still.We are stuck. Outside the hutt, the wind is blowing. Sheltered in our new home, we enjoy the unique scenery: A ballet of giant Icebergs . From small ice cubes, to huge iced cliffs they seem stuck in an eternal dance. Evrard is mesmerized by the biggest Icebergs, he dreams of accosting these magestic iced ships. Ice axes in his hands, crampons on his feet, he is ready to challenge these white wall, tainted of blue .

Raphaël bringing back the last food supply

We have been living in Sydkap shack for several days now, and it starts to feel like home. In this remote place, the wind, the sun and the clouds constantly reshape the landscape. As Laurent is taking care of his daily watch on the fjord to hopfully catch the glimpse of a narwal, our "nautical" logistic is starting to show some weakness.

TALE – At the camp, it's a peaceful day. Everyone is betting on Evrard and Laurent arrival time. In the afternoon, hearing the noise of an engine, we climb up the rocks behind the camp. We were expecting to see Ingkasi speedboat looming between the icebergs, and we are all surprised to see the Donna Wood coming straight to us. We rejoice at seeing again this oak tall ship that brought us from Iceland to Greenland.

The Scoresby Mission – Overview, part 1 (English)

Iceland was our gateway to Greenland’s East coast. We all landed in Reykjavik on July 13th in the evening, and drove through the night to the little harbor of Húsavík on the north coast. The next morning, we got onboard the Donna Wood, a 100-year old Danish lighthouse ship used today by the whale watching company North Sailing for tours in Greenland. It took three days to sail across the Arctic ocean to the 400 people strong settlement of Ittoqqortoormiit, one of the most isolated village on earth.

Stuck in Ittoqqortoormiit

TALE – Thanks to satellites phones, we could gather news from Evrard, who left for Ittoqqortoormiit with the biologists Tanguy and Nicolas, the geophysicists Eric and Agnès, and the journalist Marie-Lilas to Constable Pynt Airport. I will also buy some more food supplies, rent two kayak, and welcome the free diver Laurent Marie.
